Normally, the SMTP address is represented by the array attribute otherMailbox which holds all recipient addresses for the mailbox. The primary address is the one where the address type 'SMTP' is written in capital letters. This address is also stored in the attribute rfc822Mailbox. If you change the mail attribute, you should change the other attributes as well.
If no SMTP mailing is used for the regarding Exchange 5.5 organization, you do not need SMTP addresses for the mailboxes. This is different to Exchange 2000 (or newer) environments, where SMTP addresses are mandatory for all recipients.
